“I’m delighted to win this competition of course, but it is bittersweet. We’ve already paid some of the legal fees towards our costly divorce, and this prize will finally get us there.

38-year-old Hayley Wakenshaw from Bedlington near Newcastle today spoke of her “bittersweet” emotions in winning £1,800 towards the legal fees of her divorce in MartialAffair.co.uk’s Win a Divorce competition.

The competition, which was entered by almost 200 members of the married British public, was launched after a study by Aviva found the average cost in legal fees to get divorced came in at around £1,800.

Hayley’s marriage to her Dutch husband of 4 years broke down earlier this year and she moved back to her hometown after living with him in Hoorn, near Amsterdam for 16 years.

She said: “I’m delighted to win this competition of course, but it is bittersweet. We’ve already paid some of the legal fees towards our costly divorce, and this prize will finally get us there.

“The divorce is very amicable, and this will help us keep it that way. We really had no other choice than to split up. We tried really hard to stay together, for years.

“Having help with the fees will make a difficult process easier for both of us and help us to keep supporting each other in our future, separate lives.

“I entered the competition with my tongue firmly in cheek, not thinking for a second I’d win. I laughed solidly for an hour after getting the call to tell me I’d won the prize – of all the competitions to win, this has to be the most surreal.”

The competition sparked disbelief and admiration in plentiful measures amongst Twitter users, from divorce lawyers condemning the concept of the competition to those praising its shock value.

Paul Graham, Managing Director of MaritalAffair.co.uk, said: “It’s wonderful to think we’ve changed someone’s life for the better by freeing them from the shackles of the often-unaffordable divorce process.

“Hopefully now this young lady can properly move on with her life and begin enjoying the fresh start divorce can bring.”
