The ability to think critically to solve problems is essential for many jobs in both the public and private sectors. Economics is the field of study that can prepare adults for these jobs, which can range from market research analysts to operations research analysts. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a wide range of fields requiring such analytical skills will experience double-digit growth in the number of jobs available. To help meet this demand, Penn State’s College of the Liberal Arts is making its high-quality resident economics programs available online through the World Campus to enable working adults to complete this degree and advance their career.
Penn State will offer the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees in economics online starting in 2013.
“Both degrees provide a framework for thinking and analyzing complex problems,” said Dirk Mateer, director of undergraduate studies in Penn State’s Department of Economics. “This is a skill set that organizations highly value. These degrees also provide many paths for graduates, including law, public policy, government, corporate management, consulting or nonprofit work.”
Economics is a social science focusing on understanding and predicting human behavior by combining a strong liberal arts education with a thorough understanding of mathematics and computer science.
The B.A. in economics emphasizes the qualitative aspect of economics, including social behavior, culture, international relations and foreign languages. Students will acquire the tools to understand how incentives affect human behavior, markets and economies, so they can model real-life situations and predict outcomes.
The B.S. degree emphasizes quantitative knowledge, with a focus on developing analytical skills in mathematic theory, research and computer programming. Students will learn about mathematical models and statistical techniques for solving social challenges.
Applications are being accepted for spring semester 2013. For information, visit the economics website online.
