Birthing classes are a popular option that many expecting parents use to enhance their knowledge and understanding of the birthing process. Women's Health and Surgery Center OB/GYN in Fredericksburg, VA now offers it exclusively to their patients.

The best part of the class is the small group and open forum so that patients and their partners feel comfortable about asking questions

Women’s Health and Surgery Center OB/GYN in Fredericksburg, VA has recently announced that they will be offering monthly birthing classes to their patients. Birthing classes have been available through the local hospitals, like Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital, as a way to help expecting parents learn more about the birth experience and promote their services. What makes this unique is that this is being offered by a private OB/GYN practice to their patients and they will soon open these classes up to anyone who is interested in learning more their pregnancy.

“We are not looking to compete with the classes at the hospital as they offer a unique experience and an opportunity to meet the nurses and tour the labor and delivery suite," said Dr. Shelly James an OB/GYN who teaches the class. “We aim to see that we are supplementing and complementing those classes and hope to give our patients a full 360 degree experience.”

Initially when the classes are rolled out it will be geared to their high-risk OB patients and will be invite only. Eventually as the classes become more popular all patients will be welcome.

"Women’s Health and Surgery Center has been on the cutting edge of medicine for women’s health in the Fredericksburg and Stafford VA region for years now, from Minimally Invasive GYN surgery to high risk Obstetrics, offering classes such at these just adds to our mission of providing excellent care for our patients," said Dr. Alysha Kirkwood OB/GYN at Women’s Health and Surgery Center.

A typical class last about an hour and starts with what is considered normal for pregnancy, then deep dives into what makes a pregnancy high risk. “The best part of the class is the small group and open forum so that patients and their partners feel comfortable about asking questions,” said Karen Hall Nurse Manager at Women’s Health and Surgery Center who also teaches classes as well. “The response and interest in the classes have been very positive and we are happy to add this for our patients in the Stafford and Fredericksburg regions.”

“No other OB/GYN practice in the region offers classes of any type and the platform made available for patients to spend time with a physician and a nurse giving them an opportunity to ask questions and get the fathers involved, added Dr. Lia Shorter Medical Director for Women’s Health and Surgery Center.

The birthing classes at Women’s Health and Surgery Center OB/GYN are offered monthly and in the evening at their Fredericksburg office on Cowan Boulevard; more information of the classes can be followed on their Facebook page, Facebook.com/obgynvirginia.
