Firefighters Michael Miller and Jeff Wornham were among those responding to a high-rise fire in Hertfordshire. Increasingly, UK firefighters respond to incidents at high-rises only to find dry valves gone. The thefts are senseless acts in which thieves are willing to risk lives for the few pounds they can gain from selling the valves as scrap. Nationwide Dry Risers has decided to get involved by setting up a free phone hotline building owners and residents can call if they suspect dry risers have been tampered with. The number is 0800 320 23 23 the dedicated page on our website can be found here.

The company will come out and take a look right away and provide a proper assessment. If the valves do show signs of tampering then appropriate options for dealing with the situation will be offered. Of course, if someone notices a theft in progress they should immediately ring 999 instead.

The magnitude of the theft issue cannot be underestimated, which is why Nationwide Dry Risers is asking residents to be ever vigilant. Perhaps vigilance could have prevented the theft of more than 50 valves from 17 blocks of flats back in 2010. The Times reported that story in May of that year.

Elsewhere, the Daily Record reported 23 valves stolen from Knightswood, Glasgow; and in Islington 22 valves were taken from a Holloway high-rise this past May. Even in London, where a Westminster high-rise installed anti-tamper locks to prevent the thefts, crooks still managed to steal a significant number of dry riser valves. But there are also many more incidents involving dry riser thefts go unreported by the media.

Nationwide Dry Risers urges UK residents to be on the lookout for people acting suspiciously around high-rise buildings. They're also urging scrap metal dealers to be mindful of possibly stolen riser valves. Every time thieves steel one of these valves they are endangering the lives of high-rise residents and firefighters alike. Again, if you suspect a valve or anti-tamper lock has been tampered with please call the company's hotline at 0800 320 23 23.
