A psychotherapist with 50 years of experience shares his insights in an unorthodox new book that blends self-help exercises with true tales of success and failure. Dr. Harvey Wasserman aims to educate, nudge and entertain. He includes certain stories just for fun, believing that “the right kind of laughter opens the brain to neuroplasticity (change in brain structure and content),” he writes in the introduction. “Some of the fun stories had an essence that changed and expanded me. Perhaps they will do the same for you.”
In “John Wayne and the Fierce Kuga-Kugas,” Wasserman shares both personal experiences from his life and trips to countries around the world, as well as interactions with patients. He’s unafraid to reveal painful personal details, such as fleeing for his life when his wife’s mental illness turns deadly. Wasserman tackles issues such as fear of success, commitment, paranoia, anger and depression, detailing their effects and providing healing exercises that can be done as homework.
Wasserman’s exercises are designed to promote neuroplasticity, shifting the way the mind responds to the inner self and life. He’s candid about his exploration into unconventional therapy and diagnosis, including reading auras or sensing things about people, transformative visualizations, spiritual energies, bioenergetic analysis and polarity therapy as well as techniques learned from native healers. An index of exercises creates a handy resource for readers. Part self-help, part memoir, Wasserman’s engaging book presents a side of a psychotherapist not often seen.
Author Harvey Wasserman, who lives in Ireland, has spent 50 years in a psychotherapy practice and served a professorship at Yale University College of Medicine, where he ran the training program at one of its teaching hospitals. The son of immigrants, Wasserman earned a three-year fellowship at the Menninger School of Psychiatry and has studied alternative therapies.
