Long years before the rise of the huge state lotteries, there existed the highly illegal back-room betting parlors, some operations so small as to be virtually invisible, and often operated by victims of a Depression-era economy. In The Song of Sylvania Square, a novel by Georgette Beck, readers can get to know the Mannions, small-time, back-room bookies, and the events and people that shaped their lives.

The Song of Sylvania Square introduces readers to eight-year-old Laura Mary, world's youngest numbers runner and piano virtuoso; Momma Jubalee, disenchanted one-time beauty; crusty, profane old Daddy Jake, former bootlegger and Republican ward heeler; Handsome Willy Spadehauser, beloved star-crossed cousin; and Laura Mary's cherished dog Boozer, devoted to beer and brawling.

Within the pages of this book, stories of their improbable extended family and the colorful personalities of Sylvania Square, its somewhere-over-the-rainbow hopefuls and penny-ante gamblers unfold. All of these—including the Square's comedies and tragedies, violence and bloodshed, triumphs, failures and borderline craziness—form the rich tapestry of the young girl's peculiar childhood. As Laura Mary struggles to understand her world and her relationship with Momma Jubalee, and Jubalee with her own mother, readers can finally witness the satisfying, but strange, conclusion of her seven-year journey toward maturity.
