Des Moines, Iowa (PRWEB) September 20, 2012
The American Quilter’s Society showcases Iowa’s quiltmakers at the fifth AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines, Iowa, October 3rd through 6th, 2012. The heavy concentration of quilting talent in the area is one of the many reasons AQS is pleased to bring the world-class international quilt show to the Des Moines area year after year.
AQS is excited to showcase so much native talent alongside the international exhibitions and award-winning quilters from around the world. In addition to exhibitions from Egypt and Japan, the highlight of the AQS Quilt Show features 181 quilters vying for over $44,000 in cash prizes.
This year’s contest includes twenty-nine quilts from Iowan artists. Several contestants have won previous awards at the AQS Quilt Contest in Des Moines, Iowa. Sue Kluber of Guernsey, Iowa, has a quilt titled OLD SOLDIER in this year’s contest. Sue’s entry, LANDSLIDE, took home 2nd Place in the Fabric Art competition in 2011. West Des Moines quilter Carole J. Floyd won this same prize in 2010 with KANDINSKY AND ME. Her quilt, MISS EMILY’S GARDEN, is entered in this year’s contest.
This year’s contest also includes an entry from a previous 1st Place winner. Mary Shotwell, of Des Moines, won 1st Place in the Traditional Wall Quilts category in 2009 with MY ELEGANT GARDEN. Her entry this year is titled, LOVING APPLIQUÉ. Mary, Sue, and Carole join five other Iowans who have won honors at previous AQS Quilt Contests.
These are joined by over twenty other Iowans competing among 181 quilts for over $44,000 in cash prizes. Judging is held in Des Moines, the day prior to the show. The winners will be announced when the show opens on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012.
Also included in this year’s AQS Quilt Show will be the Des Moines Area Quilter’s Guild’s annual show, featuring over 500 quilts made by members of the largest quilt guild in Iowa. Silent auctions and a raffle quilt presented at the show bring another layer of excitement, while the Kids Korner area serves up fun for kids and grown-ups alike. Also on display will be 500 placemats made by the Des Moines Area Quilter’s Guild members for local charities. Quilting is strong in Iowa.
Dedicated to promoting the art and skill of quiltmaking, the American Quilter’s Society hopes this quilt show brings the same excitement, inspiration, and enjoyment of quilts that attendees have found at other AQS Quilt Shows in Grand Rapids, MI; Lancaster, PA; and Paducah, KY.
Entry to the exhibit is free with show admission to the AQS Quilt Show & Contest in Des Moines, Iowa. The show is open to the public, October 3rd through 6th, 2012. Tickets start at $11, with AQS member and multi-day discounts available.
