45 percent of internet users used a mobile phone to go online in 2011, and the growth curve shows no sign of slowing down this year.

Consumers are now spending less time on the computer and more time on their smartphone, making it a necessity for small businesses to ensure they are geared for the mobile internet age. Here are 4 reasons why SME’s need to be thinking mobile...

1. High growth of local searches

Google states that 95 percent of smartphone owners use their device to search for local information. So whether you are cleaning teeth or installing kitchens for a living, it is important that your business is listed locally. If you haven’t already, claim your spot on the map by using Google places. This is important as local listings often appear first on the results page which is great news for smaller businesses as you can often appear before your competitors.

2. If you’re not there, your competition probably is

It is no secret that business is going mobile; in fact statistics have been pointing that way since the iPhone was launched back in 2007. The UK office of national statistics say that up to 45 percent of internet users used a mobile phone to go online in 2011, and the growth curve shows no sign of slowing down this year. So if you’re website isn’t mobile friendly, you are probably losing customers. A recent study from IT software providers Compuware showed that 40 percent of consumers have gone to a competitor’s website as a result of a bad mobile experience.

3. You don't necessarily need an app to be mobile friendly

Some people may consider developing an app when going mobile, but having a user friendly mobile website can be just as, if not more, effective. Apps don’t appear in search engine results and may require the user to update them regularly, not to mention the compatibility factor (Android vs. Apple). Remember, much as the iPhone seems to dominate the mobile space, it accounts for less than 30 percent of all mobile devices used in the UK and the average app has a life cycle of just 30 days. With a mobile friendly website you are likely to be reaching a larger audience for longer.

4. 4G is just around the corner

The new joint venture from T-mobile and Orange, called ‘Everything Everywhere’ recently launched the latest generation in mobile communication, 4G. The network is promising speeds up to 10 times faster than the current 3G connection, making it much quicker and easier for consumers to browse and buy on their mobile. As the user experience converges across platforms, this will only increase the appeal of the mobile internet over traditional PC and laptop browsing.
