Ashley Carrier and Intern Jonathan

Bonsai Outlet Entrepreneur Ashley Carrier (L) explains his Tinyroots(TM) Bonsai Tool Kit to Intern Jonathan of Jobs4Youth in a hands-on teaching session.

Jonathan was a quick study. By organizing inventory and posting items on eBay, he helped us tremendously.

Again acting in a leadership role, president and founder Ashley Carrier (Bonsai Outlet, 190 West) provided valuable private sector work experience to an 11th grade youth in partnership with the Jobs4Youth program of the Montachusett Opportunity Council (MOC) in Fitchburg, Mass.

Carrier explained, “Through the Jobs4Youth program, I met a great young man who worked in our warehouse learning on-the-job about online retail sales, including data entry, inventory handling and shipping.” Carrier continued, “Jonathan was a quick study. By organizing inventory and posting items on eBay, he helped us generate an additional revenue that would otherwise still be sitting in the Bonsai Outlet warehouse.”

Intern Jonathan was the enthusiastic beneficiary of the Bonsai Outlet-Jobs4Youth experience: “I loved every minute of this job. It allowed me to do exactly what I enjoy including computer work and developing postings on eBay. It was great how I ended up working for this company because I had recently developed a very strong interest in bonsai trees and was unaware of Bonsai Outlet,” he said.

The Jobs4Youth program provides pathways to employment for teens in an effort to boost the employment percentage of young people currently facing a post-WWII low in job opportunities. Both parties benefit. Kathleen McDermott, executive director of MOC, challenged the region’s business and non-profit community to invest in the future today by providing youth with work experience, and Bonsai Outlet accepted this challenge. The goals are to provide youth 14-19 years with part-time jobs and employment supports, and to supply interested young workers for the benefit of local businesses.
