Mobile app discovery is a huge problem for users and developers alike. There are currently more than one million active apps available to mobile users (1). The Google Play store for Android offers close to 500,000 apps. Yet, analytics firm Adeven recently discovered that nearly two-thirds of apps in the iOS App Store are ‘zombies’ — they get no downloads, are invisible to users and have no ranking (2). A study by mobile analytics firm Localytics discovered that 26% of apps only get used once (3).
Apptro offers a unique solution, allowing users to see which apps their friends love to use frequently, not just the ones they downloaded. Apptro also provides users insight into their app usage patterns, alerting them about pre-defined thresholds such as monthly data limits.
The big difference between Apptro and its competition is that Apptro utilizes Facebook’s all-inclusive social graph intelligently. Mobile users have little tolerance to browse alphabetical list of their Facebook friends, which may run into hundreds. In real life, the core group of friends is much smaller than the friends in a user’s social graph. Apptro looks beyond the social graph to determine mobile user’s “core” group of friends before including them and their apps in the sphere of discovery. While a few companies have tried to integrate social features into app discovery, no one empowers mobile users to discover apps via social, contextual and temporal relevance.
