According to a recent report in IBISWorld, an Australian research firm, the online pet accessories industry will be worth $78 million in 2012-2013. From 2008 to 2013, the projected average annual growth will be at 16%. In 2012-2013, the report projects revenue from sales of pet supplies online in Australia to rise by 17.1%.
According to the report, “the industry is in a growth phase.” The report cites a number of reasons for the growth, including the increase in online options available to the public. Online sales of pet food are responsible for much of the increase. The report also states that more Australians are shopping online to “satisfy their everyday needs.”
According to IBISWorld, Australians are spending increasing amounts of money on their pets. Even though there are fewer pets, the average pet is cited to be provided with better food, more treats, and increased medical care. The increase in spending per pet is overtaking the decline in the overall number of pets.
According to the report, the next five years are projected to be even better for the online pet supplies industry. Online companies are expected to continue passing their savings on to consumers, while niche operators are expected to make fringe items available to more consumers. In addition, the report says, major retailers have plans in the works to establish “physical collection stops” to help them compete and be able to sell perishable goods online.
The report also cites that the online industry will continue to grow overall as those who haven’t yet embraced technology continue to do so. IBISWorld projects that the growth in sales of pet supplies online in Australia will continue to increase at 17% per year, reaching $171 million in 2017-18.
The report also projects that companies who continue to sell pet supplies online will be able to generate a high return on investment due to the small number of employees needed to run an online business or an online division of a bricks and mortar business.
Jason Balchand, owner of Online Pet Accessories, an online pet store in Australia, agrees with the general optimism of the report: “We’ve certainly seen a growth in sales that is in line with the numbers presented in the report. We have had tremendous growth so far, and expect it to get even better.”
Balchand continued, “If there’s one thing almost everyone agrees on, it’s that pet owners love their pets. In today’s world, many people shop from home on their computers or on their smartphones more frequently, and people are spending more time indoors with their pets and less time on the road fighting traffic. This increase in quality time with their pets can often result in owners choosing to spend more money on pet care including pet food, pet accessories, pet toys, and pet medication and treatment.”
Balchand concluded, “All in all, shopping for pet supplies online makes a lot of sense, in Australia or really anywhere in the world. It’s more convenient, you get more time to yourself, you don’t spend time or money going to and from physical stores, and the selection is usually better and wider. The best thing of all is that it gives you more time to enjoy with your pet.”
