Most of us have fantasies of ‘getting even’ when someone hurts us, is unfair to us, or does us harm. ‘Recompense’ is a story with a very satisfying revenge plot.

“The summer after receiving my undergraduate degree in professional writing, a tragedy took the life of an important family member,” explains author Joyce Hammock. “The circumstances were strange, bordering on bizarre. In an effort to deal with it, I started writing about it.” After applying a “what-if” scenario to it, she soon realized she had written almost 200 pages. It was this exercise that evolved into her book, Recompense (published by iUniverse).
When Elliot Bowers, a decorated undercover cop, turns dirty, he believes he is untouchable as no accusations ever seem to stick – that is, until the ghosts of his past return – and soon get started to get their way. As homicide detective Cal Hopkins begins to investigate the rape of a young girl, not only do the skeletons of Bowers’ past begin to arise, but those of his own as well.
The overall theme of Hammock’s book is a classic tale of good versus evil with a revenge plot that touches that desire for “recompense” or retribution that many have seeded inside them.
