On September 26th, Likewise Skincare, producer of facial moisturizer for dry skin, comments on article published for The Huffington Post suggesting that green tea extract can help make certain skin cancers vanish.

According to The Huffington Post, a chemical found in green tea has been used to successfully treat two types of skin cancer: epidermoid carcinoma and melanoma. The article states, “The extract, known as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), has no impact when consumed in tea but when applied to cancerous cells in laboratory tests it shrank or removed two-thirds of tumours it was used on within one month.” The study, conducted by scientists at the universities of Strathclye and Glasgow, explained that “In both studies, 40% of tumours vanished, while 30% of tumours in carcinoma cases and 20% in melanoma cases shrank. A further 10% of melanoma tumours were stabilised, so did not grow or shrink.”

The article expresses that scientists have been using EGCg and its anti-cancer properties to experiment treatments for leukemia and prostate cancer. In addition, scientists confirmed that the chemical caused no side-effects on other tissues or cells.

According to Lisa Shariat, a representative for Likewise Skincare, “Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and melanoma rates are rising tremendously in the United States. To discover that a chemical found in green tea can help those suffering with skin cancer is absolutely incredible. To prevent the risk of skin cancer, I recommend using a ‘broad spectrum’ SPF to help protect and nourish the skin.”

The Huffington Post article quotes lead researcher Dr. Christine Dufes who explains, “When we used our method, the green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumours every day, in some cases removing them altogether. By contrast, the extract had no effect at all when it was delivered by other means, as every one of these tumours continued to grow.” The research can be found in the medical journal Nanomedicine.

Likewise Skincare was founded by-board certified dermatologist and President of Likewise, Inc., Dr. Julie Pena. Likewise daily moisturizers are all-in-one but not one-fits-all.
