“Skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony…” Everyone has grown up knowing the story of Snow White and how her great beauty threw her stepmother into a jealous rage. What if Snow White’s rival was not her stepmother, but a sister whose beauty would outshine hers? In Ruby Red, the first book of The Contista Chronicles series, budding young author Kaitlyn Cumpsty-Fowler puts a darker twist to the favorite classic fairytale that readers grew up with.
If Sleeping Beauty was cursed to die at the spindle when she was a baby, Snow White’s younger sister, Ruby Red, was cursed when a drop of blood fell on her forehead. Christened with her sister’s blood, Ruby’s soul was deemed unsavable and her life condemned to pain and unhappiness—forever alone. Snow was the pride and joy of the queen and despite her often cruel nature was loved by the kingdom. Ruby was considered the odd one, an afterthought that is often forgotten because the world only revolved around Snow.
On Snow’s twenty-first birthday, seventeen-year-old Ruby’s beauty outshone Snow’s, and at that moment, Snow felt jealousy unlike anything she had ever felt before. Her cruelty would lead to tragedy, one that would change the sisters’ lives forever. Will Ruby ever be free from the curse that is bestowed upon her since birth? Readers can find out as they immerse in this unique retelling.
Interwoven with magic and witchcraft, love and romance, treachery and revenge, Ruby Red explores the dark possibilities of how the timeless tale of Snow White came to be.
