Paula Mack Smith’s new book “Summoning My Inner Ballerina: Balancing Love and Loss, Family and Friends, Life and Politics” (published by iUniverse) is a heart-warming memoir from a baby boomer who looks back at her life from the perspective of a newly minted senior citizen. With the looming retirement boom of the Baby Boomer generation, the time is ripe for a work that asks such readers to examine their lives.
Ms. Smith presents a series of life stories, some lighthearted, others wrenchingly profound, through which she, finds her inner muse, the confident ballerina pictured on the cover. The photograph, taken in 1956, shows the author at the age of 10. She would call upon her muse again and again for inner strength during the intervening 55 years, particularly in times of stress and sorrow. The little ballerina would always come through for her with her sunny, optimistic view of life.
“There is an expression I love, which says ‘Be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle,’” notes the author. “I hope this book teaches people to be more compassionate and caring toward others, and to realize that we have much more in common with one another than we think. I call on my inner ballerina as my muse in times of stress, but others can find their own inspirations or join forces with people with similar problems. We are not alone.”
“Summoning My Inner Ballerina,” in paperback, hardback or e-book, is available now wherever books are sold online.
