Plaintiff’s law firm Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C. affirmed its commitment on Mesothelioma Awareness Day to an initiative promoting awareness about mesothelioma, a disease afflicting hundreds of the firm's clients. An aggressive form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure, mesothelioma is in the spotlight today as part of a national effort to put the disease – and the continued dangers of asbestos – in the public eye.

Weitz & Luxenberg, P.C, a leading national mass tort and personal injury firm, released a statement today affirming its commitment to an initiative intended to spread awareness about a disease that has gripped the lives of many of its clients, as well as about the cancer’s ongoing cause.

September 26th is National Mesothelioma Awareness Day, a congressionally-enacted day of observation intended to spread understanding about a rare but deadly cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, a mineral widely used as an insulator throughout the first half of the last century.

The cancer, which affects the cellular lining of the lungs or other internal organs, has only one known cause – breathing or ingesting microscopic asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma has an unusually long latency period, with as much as twenty to forty years passing between exposure and the first symptoms.

In a statement, Weitz & Luxenberg said that in addition to aiding the disease’s victims, they were committed to staving off continued use of the cancerous mineral to safeguard future generations. “Our clients are deeply important to us,” the firm said, “Helping them is our purpose, but we are painfully aware that the lawsuits we file necessarily come years too late. Taking it upon ourselves to safeguard their families and future generations is a priority for Weitz & Luxenberg.

“We see the most important imperative being the continued goal of eliminating asbestos use once and for all in the United States.”

The firm revealed that asbestos use continues to pose a risk to Americans. “Public perception is that asbestos use is a thing of the past, but in reality, tons and tons of asbestos insulation are still imported into the United States every year, and each time asbestos is used in new projects, the risk of future cancer-related exposure is increased.”

The firm said it will promote awareness amongst its clients and peers, as well as through a variety of web initiatives.
