Primal Pictures and Vastaccess® have launched a partnership to provide medical coding professionals with 3D anatomy and physiology software as they prepare to meet complex new government-mandated medical coding requirements.

Customers participating in Vastaccess®’ online ICD-10 courses now have learning support through Primal Pictures’ Anatomy & Physiology Online, a 3D, online learning tool that provides virtual access to every element of the human anatomy. Anatomy views can be peeled away, rotated and labeled. The product also includes clinical topics, narrated animations of complex physiologic concepts, simple navigation and quick index and search, and a user-friendly pronunciation guide.

To continue receiving both government and private insurance payments for patient treatment, every U.S. healthcare provider must comply with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services new ICD-10 coding requirements by October 2014. The new requirements expand the number of medical diagnosis codes from 14,000 to 68,000, and the number of procedure codes from 4,000 to 87,000.

“ICD-10 implementation will radically change medical coding and reimbursement, requiring both a significant effort to implement, and a deeper skill set and knowledge base of human anatomy,” said Chet Deshmukh, Clinician and Founder of Vastaccess®. “Our customers, including the country’s largest health care coding member associations, realize that the time for training is now, and that coders need an in-depth understanding of human anatomy to be successful in the new system. Anatomy & Physiology Online coupled with ClinCorrTM, a proprietary curriculum for health care professionals at health systems, makes difficult concepts much easier to understand and adds real value to our training courses.”

The more detailed ICD-10 codes are expected to allow better analysis of disease and treatment that will lead to more effective healthcare, as well as have an optimal impact on the revenue cycle in many organizations. The compliance deadline for transitioning to ICD-10 is October 2014, and the complex process of educating staff and converting software is expected to take most health care providers more than a full year.

“Vastaccess®’ customers are proactively seeking training and solutions to help them prepare for this significant change to medical reimbursement,” said Catriona Kerr, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Primal Pictures. “We are excited to add virtual learning for anatomy and physiology to Vastaccess’ wide range of online trainings for health professionals.”
