There’s a romantic tale about a memorable thing that happened years ago on and around Sullivan's Island, South Carolina located across the Intracoastal Waterway from Mount Pleasant in Charleston County that no one ever knew. But today, that secret story is about to unfold.
ISLAND GIRL written by June Byrd Bowen tells a fictional story of Debbie Boyd, mother to three children and wife to Thomas who lived on Sullivan's island near Fort Moultrie during World War II and several decades after the war. Her family lives a good life in the island even though they had to live through hurricanes. They eat what the ocean had to offer and enjoy the beach, their friends and relatives who have affected their lives.
Island living for Debbie’s family was changing but still good even in the forties even when times were not so good in the country because of the war. But somewhere along the way, Debbie is caught between the love for her family and that of Andrew, a lonely soldier whom she introduces to them, even to her husband as a friend.
Debbie kept her secret feelings for Andrew away from her own family for over 40 years while Andrew has secrets of his own she only knows. She knows she could never leave her husband and their children whom she loves very much. She is happily married but why did this thing happen? How can she love two people at the same time? Where will their love story go?
ISLAND GIRL is a romantic tale that will stir reader’s curiosity and imagination as they gets a vivid glimpse of a serene island setting and how it is to live there during the old days but at the same time, brilliantly presents the complexity of emotions shown by a family and that of a lonely soldier who have entered their lives. Bowen has actually written a fictional story but one that could have possibly happened. Its surprise ending brings to readers a very interesting conclusion.
