Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of social or physical power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims.

In his new picture book titled A Lesson for Lexi, author Elvin Hayes tackles the very timely subject of bullying and how it adversely affects the bully and his victims as well. It tells the story of a smart and lovable lion cub from Africa named Lexi that became a bully. She is not a born bully, but is just a product of her environment wherein survival of the fittest is the name of the game.

Lexi’s parents prepared her to face a very tough world. But despite of this upbringing, she is also a victim of bullying herself and it comes from her own family. Her older brother Levi is always picking on her because she is the smallest in the family and certainly is no match for Levi’s brute strength. Aside from this, male domination by older members of the family is always a tradition that Lexi has to understand.

Because of what she think as her family’s unfair treatment to her, Lexi felt left out and she didn’t fit in. She turned her attention at school where she feels that she is feared by many. It’s certainly is payback time for her as she in turn became the school’s certified bully. However, her bullying ways will teach her a lesson she will never forget.

More than the usually entertaining picture book, A Lesson for Lexi is one profound read that will make readers think a thing or two about the bullying behavior both from the bully’s perspective as well as from the victims themselves. It presents a serious topic but allows it to flow smoothly in a story catered specifically for children who oftentimes either becomes the culprit or the victims of bullying.
