The great Italian director Federico Fellini once said, “All art is autobiographical. The pearl is the oyster’s autobiography.” If this is true then The Artist of New England, a book published by The Rand Family, is one of the pearls that mirrors the resplendence of artist Doris Rand’s life.

Doris Rand’s exceptional talent began to show at a young age. Her early creative efforts include painting copies of movie posters that her father, Charles Hatch (a movie theatre owner) brought home. After graduating from Lasell College and Boston University Art School, Doris Rand began her professional career as an artist, and so unfolded a life driven by passion and defined by an unwavering spirit of creativity.

The Artist of New England, an exclusive collection of Doris Rand’s works, offers a glimpse into the artist’s life and gift. The book was assembled by her family to honor her memory and talent as an artist. It includes some of her best works in a variety of mediums, the most prevalent of which is her personal favorite, watercolors. Doris Rand once said of herself and her craft,

“I am a watercolorist striving to give pleasure to the viewer as well as a feeling of satisfaction to myself. I try to illustrate nature with a feeling of reality combined with emotion, imagination, color, and a certain feeling of time and place. I prefer to work directly from nature. There is an excitement felt by the painter from the sounds and feelings of the elements when one paints out of doors, which I feel greatly enhances the painting quality.”

Beautiful and visually compelling, The Artist of New England presents a mesmerizing range of subjects all of which result in an artistic celebration of life, the human form, the miracles of nature and the beauty of the world.
