In his book “Secularism in Afghanistan” (published by iUniverse), Shukoor Zardushtian challenges many of the commonly accepted cultural norms created by the intersection of religion and politics in Afghanistan.
Zardushtian takes the frequently debated topic of the relationship between religion and politics into the discussion of the society and culture of Afghanistan.
“Secularism in Afghanistan” draws heavily from Zardushtian’s research, but it also presents many of his personal experiences of living in Afghanistan. Along with his study of the characteristics of Islam, he also presents his case for implementing a more secular lifestyle in Afghanistan in order for its citizens to embrace freedom and social awareness. In Zardushtian’s opinion the Islamic religion destroyed the country’s cohesiveness and is responsible for the problems that exist today.
“Secularism is a political system of government and unbiased from religious influence,” says Zardushtian. “Secularism removes the barriers of classes and fight illiteracy, ignorant, starvation, diseases and others.”
Zardushtian understands that changing society is not easy, but he offers “Secularism in Afghanistan” as a guidebook for the younger generation of Afghanistan to aid them in improving the economic and social climate.
