Alkalife, the leading provider of alkaline dietary supplements and the creator of the original water pH booster drops, announced today that it will proudly sponsor elite cyclist Ken Shuart at the Furnace Creek 508, an event known as "the toughest 48 hours in sport,” to be held Oct. 6-8 with the finish line in Joshua Tree National Park.
“Ken embodies the spirit and essence of living well through alkaline water,” said Jose Fernandez, Alkalife’s chief executive officer. “He is a natural fit to receive our support as his sense of purpose, strength and determination inspires us and fits with our mission of wellness, healing and longevity.”
The 508-mile bicycle race is revered the world over for its epic mountain climbs, stark desert scenery, desolate roads, and its reputation as one of the most gratifying endurance challenges. The course has a total elevation gain of over 35,000', crosses 10 mountain passes, and stretches from Santa Clarita (just north of Los Angeles), across the Mojave Desert, through Death Valley National Park and Mojave National Preserve.
“Since adding Alkalife water to my training regimen several years ago, my performance has been better and my recovery is quicker,” said Shuart. “I train 15-20 hours, six days a week and at age 52, I need the edge provided by Alkalife to help flush lactic acid from my body so I can train harder and bounce back more rapidly.”
A long-time veteran of extreme racing and a skin-cancer survivor, in 2008 Shuart participated in Race Across America, a 3008 mile, non-stop bike race from Oceanside Calif. to his hometown of Annapolis Md. He and his four-person team finished in seven days and raised $40,000 for the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation while helping raise awareness about safe sun practices.
Among other events, in 2009 he ran in Racing the Planet Sahara, that included six marathons in five days in the Sahara desert while carrying all his food and supplies for the entire race. And last year, he rode in La Ruta de los Conquistadores, considered the hardest mountain bike race in the world that includes four days of riding from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico across the steep, rugged, rain forest mountains of Costa Rica. On his “bucket list” for the future is the Bad Water Ultramarathon, a 135 mile run in Death Valley.
“Completing races is empowering and carries over to my everyday life,” said Shuart. “And Alkalife alkaline water has been a contributing factor to my success.”
