Los Angeles, Calif. (PRWEB) September 27, 2012
United Friends of the Children (UFC) has partnered with Together We Rise to provide bicycles to more than 60 local foster youth who will be attending the 13th annual College Within Reach event hosted at the University of Southern California’s campus on Saturday, September 29, from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Open to all foster youth in L.A. County in grades 7–12, College Within Reach offers workshops to over 650 children about the college admission and financial aid process. Students spend the day interacting with current college scholars and alumni at interactive workshops to learn what it takes to go to — and graduate from — college.
Middle school students attending the event this year will have a special opportunity to participate in a workshop hosted by Together We Rise, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of foster youth. During the workshop each student will assemble a bike that they will take home with them at the end of the day. The bikes will not only encourage the children to stay active but will also help build their confidence and self-esteem.
"We decided to get the kids involved through the process of building their own bike so they have ownership and some sense of responsibility," said Danny Mendoza, the founder and president of Together We Rise. "Not only are they riding a bike and getting more exercise, but they have a sense of accomplishment from putting it together themselves."
“Foster youth need the chance to build a strong sense of self, and having access to their own bike to help them get to and from school and other activities and simply spend more time outside is a great way to help their ongoing development,” adds Polly Williams, President of UFC. “The partnership with Together We Rise is a great fit with our focus on expanding opportunities for LA’s foster youth — opportunities which include graduating from high school and attending college, developing meaningful relationships with others and having access to a wide range of events and opportunities.”
College Within Reach is presented by United Friends of the Children in partnership with the USC School of Social Work.
