I realized that if I could create an App similar to my guitar grid exercise, teaching fretboard concepts would be much easier. My pencil and paper exercise could now exist in a format that my students are accustomed to looking at.”

Music education provider, 5 Diamond Music Services, Inc., is announcing the release of two new iPhone Apps, Guitar Note Workout and Bass Note Workout. The Apps are now available through the Apple iTunes store. The Apps will serve both teachers and students of guitar and bass guitar.

The workout Apps provide the user with the ability to practice locating notes throughout the fretboard. The ultimate goal is to help the user develop a mental mastery of an instrument's fretboard while away from the instrument itself.

Regardless of one's skill level, these Apps are very easy to use. From the App’s main menu, you have three options: the Settings, Note Selector or Instructions for use. The settings section allows you to set the time limit for game play and to choose the fretboard appearance of either rosewood or maple.

An additional setting on the Bass Note Workout App allows for the option of a 4 string bass or 5 string bass fretboard view.

The Note Selector icon takes you to the Circle of Fifths where you select a note to practice. Using the Circle of Fifths for making note selections also introduces an important musical tool that is vital to the learning of music theory.

After selecting a note, you are then taken to the fretboard playing field where you begin finding all the possible locations for that note. All the notes are to be found on each of the strings from the open position to the 12th fret.

One objective is to locate the notes as fast as you can within the allotted time limit of 15 - 20 seconds for the guitar App, or 10 - 15 seconds for the bass App.

David A. Lopez, President of 5 Diamond Music Services, Inc. provides the back story behind the creation of the two apps. “When I was in high school, at times I would sit in class and mentally practice the guitar. I would do this by drawing a guitar grid on a piece of paper, and then start practicing by drawing out specific notes, chords, or scales.

I knew that by mentally reinforcing musical information on the fretboard, I would be a better guitar player. I was never content with just knowing that a chord or a scale was somewhere on the guitar just because my instructor or a book said so. I wanted to know why the notes, chords, and scales looked the way they did on the fretboard.

After regularly doing this, I began to mentally see chord and scale shapes on the guitar's fretboard. When I did have a guitar in my hands, I had experienced greater accuracy in my playing since I could see the notes in my mind.

I realized that if I could create an App similar to my guitar grid exercise, teaching fretboard concepts would be much easier. My pencil and paper exercise could now exist in a format that my students are accustomed to looking at.”

5 Diamond Music Services, Inc. found a new way to help guitar students learn the fretboard and increase their skill level. The Guitar Note Workout App and the Bass Note Workout App are now available for $2.99 through the Apple iTunes App Store.
