Dallas Plastic Surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai discusses a recent study which conducted a major difference in men and women’s perception of what beauty looks like.

According to a recent study published in the academic journal, Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery, women and men seem to differ greatly in opinion of what their idea of beauty is, regarding one major feature of a female body – the breasts. The study was conducted by Lukas Prantl, a cosmetic surgeon and psychologist Martin Grundl. Dr. Vasdev Rai, a board certified plastic surgeon from Dallas, Texas gives his insight into the study based on his own experience as a plastic surgeon.

The experiment had a total of 34,015 participants, making it one of the largest psychological studies ever conducted. Participants used an online interface and clicked on a button to adjust sizes and shapes of a female figure. They could alter the figures weight, hips, waist, bust, and leg length; they were asked to adjust it to their perception of their own beauty ideal.

The study found that the majority of men and women adjusted the female figure to have a low to medium body weight, medium-sized hips, and a narrow waist. Conversely, a prominent difference over the preference of the breast size emerged. 40 percent of men preferred a large breast size, in contrast to only 25 percent of women.

“The majority of my patients who seek breast augmentation want their breasts to be proportionate to rest of their body frame,” said Dr. Rai. “They seek their bust proportion to enhance the curves of their body and not conflict with it. Thus my own observations of three decades of practicing plastic surgery give credence to this scientific study of women’s preferences for breast size.

Dr Rai said there are two subgroups in above group:

  •     Group 1 - Young women who just failed to develop a breast fullness i.e are flat chested. They seek breast augmentation to have twin prosthetic bulges on their chest to feel feminine and enjoy complimentary dresses and bathing suits. They seek breast augmentation to feel comfortable in their own skin.
  •     Group 2 - Mothers who have had babies and now have developed flattening of breasts from pregnancies and breast feeding. They want just enough of size increment to go back to where they were in their prime of their attractiveness.

“However there is another group of breast augmentation patients who want to appeal to male preference for larger breasts,” said Dr. Rai. “Patients who want to have large, full breasts in order to become more attractive to men. They are seeking attention and large breasts certainly get it in male eyes.”

Dr. Rai said there are also two subsets in this group:

  •     Subset 1: They choose large D cup or even larger sizes to gain competitive advantage over other women who are competing in same arena. The goal may be to find a reliable and able provider of life necessities or luxuries as case may be.
  •     Subset 2: To have a competitive advantage when seeking employment in male entertainment oriented businesses. Larger bust in this field will translate to employability and bigger tips.
