Cutting-edge infographic reveals the huge savings offered by cruises over comparable multi-centre holidays

Leading holiday company, Thomson, has commissioned a ground-breaking 3D infographic ( to illustrate the results of a recent exercise comparing the cost of an independently organised multi-centre holiday to that of a cruise following a comparable itinerary.

The infographic provides a breakdown of standard holiday costs including flights, hotels, meals, drinks and entertainment for three different travel itineraries and can be viewed here. To enable visitors to view the full 3D effect, Thomson is providing a number of 3D glasses, which can be ordered through the form at the bottom of the 3D blog post.

The infographic is available in two formats: a standard 2D version and the innovative 3D version. The 3D version uses stereoscopic imaging and is in the red-blue (cyan) 3D format. The anaglyph was created from the original 2D version by manipulating the red and blue channels in the original 2D image. Additional depth was then added to the anaglyph by masking out a section of the image to return it to its non-3D appearance. The 3D effect could then be applied separately to the foreground and background, creating a greater impression of depth.

Thomson’s Head of Online Marketing, Nathan Timmins, says: “We have always known that our cruises provide fantastic experiences and great value for money, but the potential savings for those wanting to visit a number of locations in one holiday, discovered by this study were so exceptional that we wanted to produce an equally impressive infographic to illustrate the findings.”

Notes on methodology
Flight times exclude flights to and from the UK, as cruise travellers will also fly to/from UK and also exclude check-in times.
Entertainment cost comparison assumes one theatre/show trip, one cinema trip, one nightclub/disco per passenger (children excluded from nightclub/disco).
Hotel comparison: used average cost of three star and four star hotels available in same or nearest possible location to cruise stop, on same dates. Cruise cabin for comparison: one cabin per itinerary (family share one cabin: two adults and two children). All cruise cabins are outside cabins (with window). All cruise itineraries are full-board.
Flight comparison: used cheapest and/or fastest flight available between cruise locations, or nearest airport to location, on same dates.
Meals and drinks comparison: assumes hotel provides breakfast. Each couple/family takes two meals per day at economical restaurants. Soft drinks and water consumed throughout the day.
