Discovery Science Center (DSC) and El Capitan Theatre’s “Frankenweenie” Science Fair: Sparking an Interest in Science continues on as six young finalists have been chosen to move forward in the competition! Christopher Rocci, Colin Takeda, Daniel Vietson, Delaney Rice, Ethan Salter, and Tre Risk are the six aspiring scientists that will continue on for a chance to be one of three grand-prize winners.
This summer, Discovery Science Center partnered with the famous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood to host a Frankenweenie Science Fair in conjunction with the October 5th release of Disney’s Frankenweenie, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton. Students in grade 5 – 12 were invited to submit a science project that displayed experimentally based research, illustrated scientific methodology or demonstrated a science or engineering concept of based on themes from the movie Frankenweenie.
Six finalists topped score charts with accuracy of details, explanation of project through display, oral presentation and visual creativity. Finalists’ project topics included Energy from the Dead (Compost), Reducing Aquifer Depletion Through Increased Recycled Water Consumption, Rube Goldberg Franken”weenie” Roaster, Special Effects Slime and more. All six projects will be on display at the El Capitan Theatre from October 5 to November 1, 2012. In addition, the six finalists will each receive Disneyland tickets for them and three guests for reaching this distinguished level.
Final judging to determine the three grand-prize winners will take place on September 29th at El Capitan Theatre. The science fair will conclude on October 5th when the grand-prize winners are announced at a special ceremony on the El Capitan stage prior to the 4:00PM showing of Frankenweenie. Grand-prize winners will each be awarded with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Walt Disney Studios.

After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
A stop-motion animated film, “Frankenweenie” was filmed in black and white and rendered in 3D. The talented voice cast includes: Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder.
Presented by Disney, “Frankenweenie” is directed by Tim Burton, produced by Tim Burton and Allison Abbate, from a screenplay by John August, based on a screenplay by Lenny Ripps, based on an original idea by Tim Burton. “Frankenweenie” releases in U.S. theaters on October 5, 2012.
