The Fighting Barry Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2nd annual Fighting Barry Walk/Run, hosted on September 23, 2012, at St. John’s High School in Washington, D.C., raised close to $55,000 to benefit the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation.
Lung cancer is the top cancer killer, claiming the lives of more people than breast, prostate, colon, liver, melanoma, and kidney cancers combined. Over 450 people die of lung cancer each day in the U.S. The majority of lung cancer patients are only diagnosed after the disease has significantly progressed, and will die within one year of diagnosis.
The foundation was founded by the family of Dennis Barry who battled lung cancer for six years. “We will never back down and we will still be fighting for the cure to this horrific disease in honor of my Father and the others that have to suffer through this pain,” says Annie Barry, Dennis Barry’s daughter. “His strong will and determination shined through to his very last day. He fought hard, but he didn’t leave us fighting—he left us willing. Together, we can and we will show lung cancer just how powerful our strength, love and hope are.”
The proceeds raised by the Fighting Barry Foundation go directly to the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (BJALCF), one of the largest philanthropies devoted exclusively to eradicating lung cancer through research, early detection, education, and treatment. The Foundation works with a diverse group of physicians, organizations, industry partners, individuals, survivors, and their families to identify solutions and make timely and meaningful change. BJALCF was established on March 6, 2006 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and has raised over nine million dollars for Lung Cancer research to date.
