On September 24, Studio Movie Grill made room for 225 attendees for the Health Care Reform Seminar, hosted by Prescott Pailet Benefits, a Marsh & McLennan Agency LLC Company, and John Hickman, Health Benefits Practice Leader at Alston & Bird. The two forces in the health care industry joined together to present a recap of the Supreme Court decision followed by a discussion about PPACA deadlines, action items required by employers and whether or not employers should "pay or play."
The seminar was broken up into a morning and afternoon session. Hickman provided valuable information and guidance regarding the upcoming requirements that employers must meet in order to maintain compliance with health care reform. Requirements such as:
- W-2 reporting for employers issuing more than 250 W-2 forms in a year
- Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) documents distributed to employees
- The “Pay or Play” requirement, which will require employers with more than 50 employees to offer benefits to all full-time employees in 2014 or they’ll pay an additional tax
Hickman, the head of Alston & Bird’s health benefits practice, made a good argument for most employers to continue to offer benefits versus opting out and just paying the tax.
“With many of the requirements of PPACA taking effect in 2014, the message of the seminar was to plan, not panic,” said Sharon Kushner, VP of Operations for PPB. "We want our clients to be prepared and know that we have the tools and resources to help them make well-informed decisions and stay in compliance.”
