Fifty years since the first organised package holiday took British tourists to Spain, the country remains our No 1 destination but some of our favourite locations have changed, according to travel insurance experts Direct Travel.

The first package holiday in 1952 took tourists to Palma de Mallorca, while a pioneering charter airline, Euravia, launched flights from Luton Airport 40 years ago in 1962.

Package trips and charter flights meant many Brits could afford to travel abroad for the first time. From the start, Spain was the biggest hit with holidaying Britons and 11.6 million still go there every year.

But although the Costas are still popular, other regions now attract many visitors. Here are three top picks combining the traditional Spanish delights of beaches, stunning landscapes and tapas bars with something a bit different.

1. Galicia: Spain's far-flung northwest corner boasts the 'end of the world' at Cabo Finisterre and a 100-mile strip of shore known as the ‘Death Coast’ for its many shipwrecks; Santiago de Compostela has a truly awesome cathedral and the oldest hotel on the planet, the 15th century Reyes Católicos.

2. Valencia: This east-coast home of paella is a culinary mecca (there's plenty of sangria on offer too), a floral paradise with glorious flower markets, and culture-vulture heaven thanks to its mould-breaking City of Arts complex. Look out also for fountains floodlit at night and fantastic fiestas.

3. Bilbao: The Basque capital has the dazzling, curved-metal Guggenheim art gallery (an icon of modern architecture), the sleek white Zubizuri suspension bridge, the Gran Via's buzzing shops, the Alhondiga wine warehouse converted into a hip cinema and restaurant complex, surf beaches and even a funicular.

Another thing that's changed a lot in 50 years is travel insurance. It has vastly improved both in terms of cost and cover, with great-value policies* now available to cover all travellers' needs.
