Results Ezwim Telecom Monitor 2012

Ezwim, the European Telecom Management leader, presented the results of the Telecom Monitor 2012 during the BTG Combiday in Soest, the Netherlands.

The main conclusions are:

• ARPUs (defined as average revenue per unit) have decreased sharply: between 4 and 18% YoY.
• Both in Europe and in the USA, the overall telecom costs have increased between 1 and 12% YoY, because of the proliferation of mobile subscriptions.
• Operators are gradually shifting cost from variable to fixed amounts per month. Annual usage has remained approximately the same, while subscription fees have increased.
• Significant differences remain for the rates that operators charge within different countries.
• Private costs remain substantially high. Approximately 20% of the total costs are private, which mean significant opportunities for cost savings.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) - user costs remain the same
People are increasingly working with privately owned devices such as tablets and smartphones. Extensive research has been done on the actual effects of BYOD. Surprisingly, the conclusion is that the ARPU does not increase as BYOD is deployed. In addition, some cost categories such as data roaming need extra attention, as well as costs for any MDM (Mobile Device Management ) implementation.

Importance of active user policies by implementing BYOD
Another important result is that a passive attitude in the BYOD-issue does not work. Companies who ignore consumerization of IT through BYOD face the risk of people placing their BlackBerry SIM cards in their smartphones, which could potentially make those companies lose control over telecom related expenses.

"The massive differences per country keep surprising us. The costs in Europe have increased much faster than in the U.S. The most surprising has been the lack of impact of BYOD on the average cost per user.”
