With the official start of the Salvation Army Coats for Kids Drive about to begin, Postal Credit Union of Minnesota (PCU) is reminding members, staff and the community there is still time to donate a new or gently used coat to help Twin Cities children this winter. The drive will be held October 1 – 14.

A warm coat on a cold day makes a big difference, which is why PCU and the PCU Community Foundation have partnered with the Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids project for several years. This year, to allow ample time for donations, PCU placed collection barrels in all 5 locations in early 2012. PCU employees took the opportunity to get creative, and came up with some eye-catching barrel designs. The annual Salvation Army coat drive is held in October, prior to the start of the cold weather season, to ensure kids have adequate outerwear to keep them warm. Last year PCU collected 53 coats and donated $1,000 through the PCU Community Foundation to purchase 60 more.

For 26 years, Coats for Kids has provided coats for Twin Cities’ children. More than 285,000 coats and winter accessories have been distributed to Twin Cities’ children through Coats for Kids since the program began.

“Minnesota winters can be harsh, and a warm coat becomes a necessity,” commented PCU President Russ Plunkett. “The thought of a child going without proper winter attire is unacceptable, so we are happy to take an active role in helping to prevent this through the Coats for Kids drive.”

The mission of the PCU Community Foundation is to strengthen the quality of life within our communities by supporting local initiatives at a variety of levels, including early childhood development, financial literacy programs, local food shelves and food programs, veteran’s organizations, affordable housing programs and more. Donations to the foundation are tax-deductible and funds received are reinvested into the community. Learn more about how you can help these worthy causes through PCU Community Foundation.
