People opt to use their garage as a room addition and choose a carport as a nifty alternative.

2012 has seen a slight uptick in home sales but buyers still find themselves on a tight budget. Some home buyers with larger families needing a four bedroom house have been choosing a three bedroom house and converting the garage into an additional bedroom or office. Where do they park the car? Portable carports have become a viable option for vehicle storage.

A leading carport and canopy supplier Ace Canopy has seen a sharp demand in carports for people wanting to convert their garage.

Ace Canopy sales manager Steve Benson said, "There have been a higher than usual amount of calls this past year from customers wanting to use a carport because they wanted to use their garage for additional home space."

The carports have proven to be a nifty option for home owners needing more living space. Owning one can help keep your car clean and out of the elements that can damage it like wind, rain and hail.

It is most usually a metal or canvas structure that is made to cover vehicles, recreational vehicles, sport utilities and off road all terrain vehicles. Sometimes it is free standing which means it sits on it's own or it can be attached to a building or home. Most of them only have one or two walls on them.

Carports allow for more ventilation and natural air flow to move through them compared to garages. Some of the metal used is steel, aluminum, iron or tin. Some are modular and preassembled and others are made from canvas or durable plastic.

It is usually one of the most economical ways to keep a car out of the elements. Adding a garage onto your home can be very expensive and time consuming. A carport is easy to install and maintain and usually they can be set up and installed in less than a day.

Sun damage is another way that leaving your car out in the elements can damage it. A covering over it will block the sun rays that will cause paint to damage and plastic to crack. If you live in an area that gets snow in the winter then it is also easier to get your car out of your driveway without having to shovel snow off of it.

Owning a carport is a great investment to make to keep a vehicle in the best working order.
