Uesugi Farms has commissioned Vista Solar to convert 4-acres of unusable farmland into a 791kW solar power plant; Uesugi Farms expected to save more than $2.5 Million over the next 25 years.

Vista Solar’s solution allowed us to convert a piece of land that was essentially a liability into an asset with no money down – making the choice to going solar a virtual no-brainer

Vista Solar today announced the awarding of a 791kW commercial solar installation for Central California based grower/packer/shipper, Uesugi Farms. Vista Solar’s design converts a previously unusable parcel of farmland into a solar power plant capable of generating over $2.5 million in savings for Uesugi Farms over the next 25 years. The system uses over 2,700 solar panels and has to be elevated nearly 12 feet off the ground in order to avoid base flood elevations for the area.

In addition to providing creative engineering solutions for the challenging installation site, Vista Solar was able to provide project financing that allowed Uesugi Farms to install the solar system with $0 money down and remain cash-flow positive for the duration of the financing term. “It makes sense to use the clean, renewable resource of the sun to power our business sustainably,” said Pete Aiello, Owner/General Manger of Uesugi Farms. “Vista Solar’s solution allowed us to convert a piece of land that was essentially a liability into an asset with no money down – making the choice to going solar a virtual no-brainer.”

According to conversion formulas provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Uesugi Farms’ solar system is expected to displace more than 1.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year over the next 25 years. Construction on the site is slated to begin in Q4 of 2012.

About Uesugi Farms
Uesugi Farms was founded in the 1950s by George Uesugi in Morgan Hill. In 1979, Joe Aiello and his partner, Dennis Humphreys, purchased the company and began farming approximately 100 acres of fruits and vegetables. Over the next couple of decades, Joe and Dennis continued farming the commodities they inherited from George – Napa cabbage, strawberries and chili peppers – and guided the company through a steady expansion of acreage, volume, commodities offered and geographical areas farmed.

Today, Uesugi Farms is headquartered in Gilroy and is now co-managed by Joe and his son Pete. They oversee an operation of 4,000 acres which spans from Northern California to Sonora, Mexico. This geographical expanse allows Uesugi to produce on a year-round basis, making their bell peppers, chili peppers, Napa cabbage, strawberries, pumpkins and sweet corn available to its customers any time they need it.
