This holiday season the numbers of seasonal hiring is expected to be greater than that of last year according to recent surveys and studies. The recently published Challenger Annual Holiday Hiring Outlook claims that retailers are upbeat about sales prospects, but there may not be a big hiring surge like in 1999, which was during the dotcom boom. However, the numbers of holiday season hires are going to be significantly higher than in last year and add at least 40,000 more jobs, despite some employers like Target predicting lower recruitment numbers.
However, positive trends including greater sales expectations can lead to a temporary surge in hiring. In August 2012 the total payroll employment was up by more than 1.8 million workers in 2011. That is sure to make a significant difference as also the growth in weekly earnings reported by the bureau of labor statistics.
Kohl’s has already announced that it would be increasing its seasonal recruiting by more than 20%, from 40,000 in 2011 to an expected 52,700 this year. UPS and FedEx are expected to add workers if the holiday season gets under way with close to two million more people having jobs than they had last year. Big retailers like Wal Mart and Toys R US are also expected to boost hiring. However the situation is significantly better than that in 2011, when there were only 1.9% growth in seasonal jobs compared to more than 30% in 2010.
The projections made in the Challengers Annual Holiday Hiring Outlook fully agree with the job trends data observed at America’s top job board, EmploymentCrossing. In fact, in just the last seven days, the job board listed over 550,000 jobs in the private sector, a positive indication of jobs growth
