Close to half of Americans get in a charitable mood toward the end of the year, according to a new survey by credit card comparison and financial education website CreditDonkey.com. The survey of more than 1,100 Americans found that 46% plan to donate to charity this holiday season.

“While it’s nice to see a large portion of people wanting to help out others, the survey also shows the tough economy is holding some of them back,” says Charles Tran, founder of CreditDonkey.com. "Unfortunately, many people still don’t have the money to spare even if they wanted to give. They have to be tightfisted with their cash or donate their time, through volunteering efforts, to give in their own way to those who need it.”

The reasons respondents gave to why they donate include:

  •     'Tis the season for giving.
  •     Other people need help.
  •     It's the right thing to do.
  •     It makes me feel good.

The reasons respondents gave to why they do not donate include:

  •     Not enough money.
  •     Charities tend to waste money.
  •     I'm donating my time instead of money.
  •     I need charity myself.

When CreditDonkey.com examined the data by ages, a different picture emerged. Survey respondents between the ages of 35 and 44 are more likely to give money this year – 61% of them said they will make a charitable donation, a higher percentage than other generations. “People in this age group tend to be more settled in their lives and careers,” Tran explains. “For that reason, they are probably in a position to be able to afford charitable donations and be more aware of the opportunities that make a difference.
