As part of a larger initiative to educate dog owners on proper nutrition, effective training, and other ways to raise a happy and healthy dog, the Dogington Post reviewed products, toys, food, treats and trainers for their first annual Top Dog Awards of 2012.

Three companies or products will be nominated in each of several categories including Best Canned Food, Best Dry Food, Best Organic Food, Best Raw Food, Best Treat, Best National Pet Store, Best Toy, Best Dog Trainer, Best Rescue, and more.

This week, the nominees for the Best Dog Toy category were announced via the website and Dogington Post’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

“We’re using strict criteria when nominating companies and products for these awards,” said Brandy Arnold, Content Editor for Dogington Post. “Excellent dog toys will encourage active play time, stimulate your dog mentally, or provide a safe outlet for a dog’s natural chewing behavior.”

“Additionally,” Brandy said, “we are looking at the ethics of the companies that produce these products, where they are made, and what materials they are made of. We won’t recommend or award a product that isn’t going to be safely enjoyed by our reader’s dogs.”

One of Dogington Post’s Top Dog nominees is PrideBites Interactive Dog Toys, a stuffed squeaky toy built to withstand tough chewers. PrideBites gives back to the community through their “Buy a Toy, Help Save a Dog” program. For every single toy sold, PrideBites donates $1 to animal shelters and organizations that help dogs in need.

The Nina Ottosson Dog Worker Wooden Puzzle Toy is the second Best Dog Toy nominee. It is a treat puzzle that promotes interactive play between people and their pets and satisfies a dog’s natural need for mental stimulation. Nina Ottosson puzzles are manufactured in Sweden and are the only puzzles on the market that meet California’s strict standards for composite board.

Rounding out the Top Dog Awards Best Dog Toy nominees is Planet Dog’s Orbee-Tuff Glow for Good Ball, a minty-flavored glow-in-the-dark bouncy ball for strong chewers. 100% of proceeds from the sale of the Glow for Good Ball go directly to the Planet Dog Foundation, a non-profit organization that funds the training, placement and support of service dogs.

Dogington Post reaches over 2.5 million dog lovers each week. The site’s readers will be asked to vote for their choice of the three nominees to win the Top Dog Award in the Best Dog Toy category. All Top Dog Award winners will be announced after each of the categories have been voted on. Winners will be chosen by a combination of fan votes and committee and announced in January 2013.

Winners will receive the Dogington Post Top Dog Seal of Approval, massive social media recognition and a press release by Dogington Post announcing their award.
