Build Group, Inc. is currently well underway on the structural upgrade and remodel of the Epiphany Hotel at 180 Hamilton Avenue in Palo Alto for Joie de Vivre Hospitality. The 8-story structure will open its doors in the summer of 2013 as a four-star boutique hotel.

At 57,000 gross square feet, the building’s interior and exterior will be completely refurbished into a lobby, work lounge, restaurant, bar and 86 luxurious rooms. Since preconstruction began on the project, Build Group has been working with client Joie de Vivre and design team Steinberg Architects, McCartan Interior Design, and SGH structural engineers to provide solutions that work for the existing building and the client’s budget.

“Build Group is helping to bring our vision to life and gave great recommendations on how to realistically build this project,” said Joie de Vivre founder Chip Conley. “We chose Build Group as our contractor because we have a history working with their Principals and they have continually proven their commitment to high quality. We’re excited to team with them and bring this hotel to downtown Palo Alto.”

The existing concrete structure, built in the 1960’s, has a Post Tensioned (PT) mat foundation requiring special care and sequencing procedures during the retrofit and installation of new underground piping infrastructure. In addition to strengthening the mat foundation, the team will be retrofitting the superstructure with new shear walls, collector beams, and carbon fiber reinforcement.

“This is a complicated project, but we have a superior team out here,” said Build Group Project Manager Jenny Hsia. “It’s been great working with Joie de Vivre and the design team; they have such a unique vision for the project, and the design aesthetic is going to spot on for Palo Alto. I’m excited for the public’s reception when we complete the project next summer.”
