A recent study reveals that a large percentage of Australian employers are now using professional and social media for hiring and that more intend to use it in the future, thus diminishing the relevance of professional resumes in job recruitment. More than a quarter of Australia’s employers are now using information from professional and social media websites to aid in recruitment, according to research released this year by specialist recruitment and HR services provider Randstad. Data from the study shows that 26% of employers surveyed are currently using social media as part of their recruitment strategy, with almost a third (32%) expecting to use it in the future. Majority of those surveyed (65%) also believe that social media should be part of any company’s attraction strategy. With the job community’s growing dependence on social media for recruitment, traditional application materials, such as professional resumes and CVs, appear to be losing their relevance. However, experienced recruiters and HR experts state otherwise.

Kylie Hammond, CEO and founder of the resume writing consultancy firm Resumes Australia, reasons that while professional and social media is indeed useful for scouting new talents, other steps in the job recruitment process still call for a resume. Ms Hammond states that after finding a candidate online, job recruiters, more often than not, will still ask for a resume to further evaluate the candidate’s credentials prior to scheduling an interview. Because resumes are still widely used, she advises new applicants to create one or update old documents to suit today’s job market:

“A well-written executive resume is an important first step in the recruitment process and your future career. It is an essential marketing tool and needs to be strategically customised to highlight your experience and showcase the skills, strengths, capabilities and knowledge that make you unique,” explains Ms Hammond.

Ms Hammond adds that simply having a resume may not be enough. Job seekers should ensure the quality of their resumes and watch out for errors in writing, grammar, spelling, and formatting.

“Clarity, flow of information, and the right level of detail are essential when developing an effective resume. Use the correct style, tone, language and approach relevant to your job market. Presenting your resume with the best layout is also crucial to your document as it builds structure to information and represents your image,” states Ms Hammond.

In addition to creating a strong profile, Ms Hammond also advises job seekers to prepare well for interviews. She reasons that while an effective resume does help applicants get noticed, the job interview often reveals more about the candidate’s skills than information listed in the resume — or on professional and social website profiles.

“How you answer questions in an interview also gives employers an indication of your verbal skills. From your responses, they can gauge how well you communicate, and how your demeanour and personality come across to others. Great experience means nothing, for instance, if you’re a mumbler. The more passion, detail and skill you put into your answers, the better chance you’ll have of impressing the interviewer,” Ms Hammond asserts.

Although a growing portion of the country’s employers are turning to the Internet for job recruitment, these only serve to complement traditional application materials and methods. According to Ms Hammond, “Even if you have a network of contacts that can introduce you to opportunities, you will still need a professional resume to most effectively present your expertise, experience, skills and qualities.”
