Brooksville, FL (PRWEB) July 28, 2012
Anomaly: It’s a word frequently associated with sinkhole detection. And it fits.
It's an Irregularity- something that deviates from the norm or from expectations. Yes, for the thousands of residents who live in areas pocked with sinkholes….particularly those who moved here from a different part of the country where sinkholes are not part of the scenery, facing the prospect of dealing with a sinkhole is more than one of life’s little glitches.
It's a Pecularity- something strange and difficult to identify or classify. In the State of Florida, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not should be the only place to enjoyably experience strange and unexplained anomolies. But Florida, and central Florida in particular, is built on what is classified by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as karst topography which includes the geological anomaly known as the sinkhole.
What is KARST? For starters, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, " The term karst refers to the terrain and a sinkhole is one of the types of drainage features reflected by that type of terrain." We’ll leave much more about that definition for the experts to delve into, when the Sinkhole Forum convenes again on Tuesday, July 31st evening at 6:00pm at the Hernando County Association of Realtors, at 7321 Sunshine Grove Road, Brooksville, FL 34613.
Mr. Michael J. Wightman, P.G. is President of GeoView, Inc., a firm whose specialties include the geophysical mapping and assessment of properties for sinkhole occurrence. GeoView has performed over 15,000 sinkhole-related investigations throughout Florida. Mr. Wightman will discuss the technologies and approach used in the initial assessment of homes for potential sinkhole activity and how this information is utilized in the overall study of a residential or commercial property.
Both Structural and Geotechnical engineers from Arehna Engineering, Inc which specializes in sinkhole evaluation, will be on the evening's panel. Their engineers have expertise in completing subsurface investigations that can conclude whether or not damage to a structure has been caused by sinkhole activity. AREHNA has assembled a team of highly trained professionals who are widely regarded in the State of Florida.
Arehna’s geotechnical engineering professionals and team members have considerable experience assessing the presence or absence of sinkhole activity and consequent sinkhole loss as defined by §627.706 Florida Statutes, and they have consulted on hundreds of cases throughout sinkhole-prone Florida. Arehna Engineering, Inc. provides engineering services for all aspects and phases of area projects including: Subsidence Exploration, Site Characterization, Engineering Analyses, Laboratory Testing, Soil Treatment and Remediation Recommendations, Geotechnical Value Engineering Solutions, Alternative Foundation Solutions, Expert Witness Testimony, and Neutral Evaluation services.
James J. Collier, President of Certified Foundations, Inc. (CFI), will be representing his general contracting company on the panel. For 23 years, CFI which specializes in Florida foundation stabilization and sinkhole repair, has successfully completed the remediation plans developed by area engineers for thousands of residential and commercial customers.
In addition, Mr. Collier was instrumental in developing the only 10-Year transferable warranty for foundation stabilization currently available in the United States. Offered by 2-10 Home Buyer's Warranty (HBW) exclusively for CFI customers, this insurance-backed warranty assures the peace of mind that only a warranty which covers materials and worksmanship and administered by the nation's leading structural warranty company can provide.
