Drippler.com, a gadget news aggregator that has been used by over one-million people, is adding its findings to a parade of user trend surveys that point to a difficult challenge ahead for RIM and its new CEO Thorsten Heins. Only 25% of BlackBerry users indicate in their preferences on Drippler.com that they want a BlackBerry for their next smartphone, while 75% want to switch to competing smartphones.
“Our users indicate in their profiles what devices they own and what devices they want to own, so this gives us the ability to discover what type of smartphones Blackberry owners want next,” says Matan Talmi, Drippler CEO. “Our data is in-line with other recent surveys that suggest an increasing number of Blackberry users want to switch to iOS or Android.”
In December ChangeWave Research surveyed consumers who said they plan on buying a smartphone in the next three months and 54% of respondents said they plan to buy an iPhone. Samsung was a distant second at 13%, Motorola 7%, HTC 3% and RIM trailed its major competitors at just 2%.
Whether a survey converts into sales is another story but ChangeWave found that customer satisfaction also followed the trend of iPhone scoring well and RIM trailing the pack. 75% of iPhone owners said they are “very satisfied”, Samsung and HTC got 47%, Motorola 45% and RIM had 22%.
January's Nielsen smartphone report also indicates a shrinking market share for RIM. According to Nielsen RIM had a six per cent share of ‘recent smartphone acquirers’ in the U.S. in October, November and December, 2011. Apple iOS had 37% of recent smartphone acquirers and Android led this category with 51.7%.
Even though some surveys make it sound like consumers have their minds made up, Drippler offers a free service that helps users do more research and stay totally up to date before buying a smartphone or any gadget. Drippler users can flag gadgets either as ‘Have’ or ‘Want’. By flagging gadgets ‘Want’ users can monitor all relevant product reviews, comparisons, pre-orders, releases, price reductions and rumors about the next models about to be launched.
