America's Best-Selling House Plans

We initiated our ENERGY STAR® Home Plan Competition to encourage our designers and architects to create new, energy-efficient, sustainable home plans with the same design detail and amenities that homeowners expect from our best-selling house plans.

The House Designers in its commitment to offer house plans that, when built, use less energy, less water and fewer resources is once again sponsoring its annual ENERGY STAR® house plan competition. After partnering with ENERGY STAR® in 2008, The House Designers created the competition to encourage its group of leading residential architects and designers to create fresh, innovative, cutting-edge home designs that can save 20 to 30% of a home’s energy cost.

In a world of sensationalized green marketing, The House Designers wanted to have an authentic, ENERGY STAR® house plan collection that was expanded every year with new, creative, green designs. The past three years have produced award-winning blueprints that include the strict energy efficient details ENERGY STAR® requires along with the design amenities that families, individuals and builders expect in today’s home plans.

“We initiated our ENERGY STAR® Home Plan Competition to encourage our designers and architects to create new, energy-efficient, sustainable home plans with the same design detail and amenities that homeowners expect from our best-selling house plans,” said Tammy Crosby, Chief Operating Officer of The House Designers, the internet’s leading provider of construction-ready house plans.

“We take our responsibility to help protect the environment and our partnership with ENERGY STAR® very serious and this competition produces innovative, trend-setting house plans that really do impact energy usage and sustainability,” Crosby said.

The House Designers’ ENERGY STAR® house plan collection allows builders and consumers to purchase house plans that include the ENERGY STAR® details needed to build a “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR®” home. This collection includes every style and size imaginable from craftsman to country to small efficient homes to luxury ramblers. “Our customers with large families who need larger homes, still want to build energy efficient homes and we offer home plans in a wide variety of sizes to promote energy efficiency to anyone building a new home,” Crosby stated.

All ENERGY STAR® house plans are reviewed by a RESNET® Certified Energy Rater to ensure they meet the new requirements and features set by the EPA’s® ENERGY STAR® Version 3 Program to qualify as "Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR®”. Energy-efficient features and construction details typically found in ENERGY STAR® qualified homes include tight construction and duct systems, properly installed insulation, high performance windows, efficient heating and cooling equipment and ENERGY STAR® qualified lighting and appliances.

“We realize the challenges home builders encounter when trying to make their homes energy efficient and compliant with “Designed to Earn the ENERGY STAR,” said Crosby. “It’s more expensive and time-consuming trying to implement energy details after a home is built. Our HERS (Home Energy Rating System) rater approved floor plans come with all the details needed to meet ENERGY STAR’S® standards and are implemented from the ground up.”

Residential manufacturers can submit green home building products to be showcased with the new, 2013 ENERGY STAR® house plan collection. The House Designers endorses residential products that are energy efficient, made from recycled products or products that preserve natural product, have WaterSense® features, use low or no VOCs and/or promote healthier indoor air quality. “There are so many wonderful green products to consider when building a new home like highly energy-efficient kitchen appliances, HVAC systems, lighting and windows, eco-friendly paint, radiant flooring/heating, engineered wood framing systems, cultured stone and brick and much more,” Crosby offers. “Building a house with all the energy details and specs along with the right product choices creates a house that can save 20 or 30% of a home’s energy cost with excellent indoor air quality while reducing the use of fossil fuels,” Crosby adds. “We all need to participate to protect and preserve the environment especially when it comes to building new homes.”
