Accent Building Products, a direct distributor of home improvement products, reports an increase in skylight-related traffic on their website and in customer inquiries regarding the energy-efficient properties of skylights. During the winter months, homeowners planning for spring and summer renovations do online research and make inquiries to assist with decision making. As homeowners look to make “green” home renovations, skylights are included in the conversation because they offer natural light and ventilation options.
The green home concept is not new. Many builders of new homes and homeowners making renovations look for options that use less energy and natural resources and create less waste. Skylights are included in “green” options because they offer natural light which reduces the need for interior light sources during daylight hours, they provide natural ventilation, and they can provide warmth from the sun in the winter months. Accent Building Products carries Velux® skylights, many of which meet ENERGY STAR® requirements for all US climate zones.
In the warmer month, Accent’s skylights minimize the heat gain associated with UV penetration, while preserving air conditioned temperatures inside. The skylight glass is coated with low emissivity coatings (Low-E) to make the skylights more energy efficient. Heat rising to the ceiling can be released if a venting skylight is installed. This type of skylight allows for natural ventilation; letting heat escape which helps keep the room naturally cooler. Skylight shades and blinds further help reduce UV penetration.
The fall and early-winter months typically bring a drop in exterior home renovation projects as much of the US experiences cold temperatures and severe weather. “The calls we have been getting concerning skylights are customers wanting green home renovation options and asking about the energy efficiency of skylights,” report Lawrence DePippa, Internet Marketing Manager of Accent Building Products.
New-home builders or people building additions can take advantage of inserting skylights during the building process. Home remodelers can update any room with skylights and sun tunnels to include more natural lighting. The passive natural light that comes through a sun tunnel (also known as a tubular skylight) can be directed to interior rooms such as bathrooms and hallways.
“We cannot be certain that the interest in skylights will turn into orders but we found the renewed interest over the last few months to be inspiring,” says DePippa. “It sends a positive message to home improvement suppliers.”
