http://www.ExecuNet.com – Executives seeking to transition to a new industry in the new year have a definite chance of effectively making that change if they can demonstrate they have the most transferable qualities, according to ExecuNet’s recent survey of 170 search firm recruiters.

Executive recruiters forecast 18 percent of 2013 top-level leadership placements will be industry outsiders, making the leap from one sector to another. However, recruiters will have an easier time presenting an executive candidate to a company when the most transferable qualities are evident and have been demonstrated throughout the executive’s career.

ExecuNet members, many who successfully made transitions across industries, shared their experiences:

“A person with no background can be hugely valuable to an organization that may be stuck in their thinking because they are so ‘knowing,’” said an ExecuNet member, a president of a consulting business. “You can bring fresh perspective and ask questions they stopped asking themselves long ago but are still useful to be asked.”

“To be successful in your transition be sure to have someone and/or a business coach who can support you in this career change. With the right support your transition will be successful,” suggested another ExecuNet member, a director of mobile marketing.

“Companies should hire for attributes or inherent qualities such as inquisitiveness, tenacity and ‘need-to-succeed’ and train for competencies, which includes industry terminology, product knowledge, etc.” said Don Weintraub, ExecuNet's Managing Director of Performance Improvement and Career Services. “We coach executives on how they can position themselves to recruiters and companies so their past executive-level performance can be seen as solid predictors of future success.”

In the ExecuNet survey, executive recruiters also identified the top functional areas that had the greatest ease transitioning from industry to industry.
