Set off some fireworks…don a feather costume…prepare the camel feast! Makeshift Magazine, a Journal of Hidden Creativity, celebrates its anniversary with the Celebration Issue, presenting rites, rituals and festivities found around the world.
Makeshift, a quarterly print and online magazine, is commemorating a successful first year of documenting creativity and ingenuity from emerging markets, black market trade, and informal economies across the globe. Each issue brings narratives and photographs tied to one central theme, like Mobility, Resistance, and Communication.
To honor their first anniversary, the latest Makeshift issue showcases celebration in its many street-level iterations, such as gospel singing on Cape Town’s trains, knockoff purse parties in Pennsylvania, an annual toy drive by biker gangs in Tijuana, and the Kumbh Mela--a bath for 80 million in India’s Ganges River, this issue chronicles inventive ways in which we cut loose, party or pray hard, and commemorate what’s most important.
But the biggest jamborees aren’t spontaneous; it takes serious planning to support large-scale, often unpredictable, carousal. Makeshift reporters pull back the curtains, past the revelers and spectators, to reveal the infrastructure that supports a celebratory swell, the boon it brings to a local economy, and the waste it leaves behind.
