Armed Forces Insurance (http://www.afi.org) recently announced its sponsorship of the National Veterans Network in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution in a national tour of the Congressional Gold Medal and its inspirational story.

Nearly seven decades after the beginning of World War II, the Congressional Gold Medal - the nation’s highest civilian award, was bestowed collectively, on the U.S. Army’s 100th infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military intelligence Service for their extraordinary accomplishments in World War II. The men in these units, comprised almost entirely of persons of Japanese ancestry, fought with uncommon bravery and valor against our nation’s enemies on the battlefield in Europe and Asia, even while many of their parents and other family members were held in internment camps. Their record demonstrates an abiding faith in the American dream, and provides an indelible testimony to the meaning of American patriotism and spirit.

“On behalf of the members of Armed Forces Insurance, we are proud to support the national tour of the Nisei Congressional Gold Medal and the National Veterans Network,” said LtGen Garry L. Parks (USMC, Retired), Chairman. “This is a wonderful opportunity for many more Americans to learn the story of why these brave warriors were recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal.”

Beginning in January 2013, the medal will begin its seven-city national tour through a partnership between the National Veterans Network, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and the National Museum of American History.
