I want my readers to hear a clear warning that freedom can be taken away,” he says, “and a reminder of how precious freedom is.

In Dr. Julio Antonio del Marmol’s recent memoir “The Cuban Lightning: The Zipper” (published by iUniverse), readers are taken into the covert world of being a spy and shown how this life is not always like a typical Hollywood spy movie.

Growing up in Cuba, del Marmol became one of the thousands that escaped the Castro regime, fleeing its oppression and barely escaping with his life. Once arriving in the United States, he vowed to continue his struggle against Castro and began working with the international intelligence community as a spy and freedom fighter.

Del Marmol was eventually given command of one of the most amazing covert operations ever conceived. Codenamed “The Zipper,” this operation was one of the largest secret money-printing operations in history. He was assigned the job of supervising a team while they printed millions of dollars worth of U.S. currency which was used to support the fight against terrorism and oppression all over the world.

The operation came at great personal cost; del Marmol was betrayed and labeled a counterfeiter by a close friend. Even though he had the undocumented sanction of government intelligence services, he was disavowed and abandoned. Sitting in jail, cut off from his contacts, he hatched a plan to escape, even as the Secret Service was doing everything in its power to convict him and send him away for life.

An excerpt from “The Cuban Lightning”:

I leaned back a little and said curiously, “Is there something illegal in what you guys plan to do?”

His look turned serious – deadly serious. “Yes, very much illegal. We are going to clone the billions of dollars we need to tear down the Berlin Wall and bankrupt the Soviet Union. We are going to sweep down once and for all from South and Central America the influence of the Castro communists.”

Del Marmol hopes that readers will expand their minds by reading “Cuban Lightning”. “I want my readers to hear a clear warning that freedom can be taken away,” he says, “and a reminder of how precious freedom is.”
