The first CT scan to be carried out on the mummy believed to be King Ramesses III revealed that he had his throat cut. It is hotly debated how the king died and now it is hoped that through the new technology this controversy can be ended. The history is shrouded in mystery; The Judicial Papyrus tells of four separate trials of those listed in a plot which involved two of the kings known wives one called Tiye and her son Prince Pentawere who was a possible heir to the throne. Pentawere was found guilty at the trial and took his own life.

Two mummies are housed at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo one is King Ramesses III and the other found in a royal tomb near the Valley of the Kings is believed to be the king’s son Pentawere. CT scans and DNA test were carried out on the mummies which found a deep, 2.7in (7cm) wound to the throat of the King. Scientists believe this could have killed him immediately. The DNA tests showed that the unidentified body was of a young man who was a blood relative of Ramesses III and probably his son.
The body of the young man was also examined by CT scan and it was found that he had unusual skin folds and wrinkles around the neck and an inflated chest – this person could have been strangled to death. The body was not mummified in the normal way and was covered in a goatskin which could have been a punishment of a non-royal burial. These are surprising and fascinating results to the forensic analysis.
