“Married couples may be leaving well over $100,000 on the table by not making a plan and exploring their options,” said Blair. “Widows, widowers, divorcees and single individuals also have options."

Helping America’s retirees decide when to pull the ripcord on the golden parachute of Social Security benefits is Premier Living Social Security Consulting’s mission.
In January, Premier Living will roll out a nonprofit certification program to educate and train CPAs, enrolled agents, financial advisors and other professional advisors to help their own clients determine when to take benefits. The purpose of the program is to educate advisors about Social Security, increasing advisors’ value to clients.
Premier is finalizing details regarding its certification program. The program will be the only one of its kind in the nation, said Premier partner Marc Kiner, a CPA for 30 years and former owner of a CPA firm.
Upon completion of the training, professional advisors will be well versed in the Social Security program and can help clients navigate the Social Security maze.
“We see the certification program as an avenue for professional advisors to grow the services they offer clients and at the same time connect with Social Security experts, who will keep them up to date on changes within the industry,” said Kiner. “We want to educate advisors throughout the country to help people make the right decisions on when to access their benefits.”
Premier Social Security Consulting is a three-year-old Cincinnati firm helping retirees maximize the amount of Social Security benefits they are entitled to. Entrepreneurs Kiner and Jim Blair, a 35-year veteran of the Social Security Administration, counsel individual clients to help them decide the best time to access benefits in order to maximize lifetime Social Security benefits.
“If you’ve been drawing Social Security benefits for a year or longer, it’s too late to change,” said Kiner. “But people wondering how to maximize benefits over their lifetimes need to think about when to file. We realize many people don’t understand Social Security or the benefit amounts they are entitled to. Our goal is to empower people to take control and get the most from their Society Security benefits.”
Social Security recipients need to make a plan to take control and maximize their benefits, said Kiner. For that reason, Premier has developed a "Make a Plan" Social Security checklist. The checklist identifies 10 items people must consider before applying for benefits. The checklist can be downloaded from the Premier website at http://www.mypremierplan.com.
“Married couples may be leaving well over $100,000 on the table by not making a plan and exploring their options,” said Blair. “Widows, widowers, divorcees and single individuals also have options. Premier counsels folks on when to file to maximize benefits. Social Security benefits may be maximized by combining various strategies including ‘claim and suspend’ and ‘restricted application.’”
Middle income workers born in 1950 who turn 62 years old in 2012, for example, may discover that collecting Social Security benefits at age 62 will garner them $1,208 in monthly income. By waiting until age 66 to claim benefits, however, they increase monthly payments to $1,603 per month. Those waiting until age 70 to file will receive $2,116 per month.
“Individual decisions on when to take benefits depend on a variety of factors,” said Kiner, “such as a recipient’s health, expected longevity based on family history and financial need. A good decision for one person may not be right for another. We want to help everyone make the right decisions based on their individual needs.
