GeckoCap changes the game for asthma. Our platform leverages mobile technologies, cloud computing, and reward mechanisms to empower families and their children in their own health

Gecko Health Innovations Inc., a healthcare mobile technology company, announced today that its patent pending new solution for pediatric asthma, GeckoCap™, will be unveiled at the 2013 International CES® in Las Vegas, from January 8-11, in booth #73409 at the Eureka Park startup pavilion. GeckoCap is sponsored to attend through a partnership between American Airlines and Startup America, and was selected because of its potential to positively impact the lives of many Americans. Gecko Health Innovations previously received funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield and Express Scripts as part of the HealthBox startup accelerator in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

GeckoCap is a small, colorful, and smart button that is easily added to inhalers, and it allows parents, families, and doctors to monitor their child’s asthma. The GeckoCap glows when the next dose is due. The GeckoCap can be seamlessly integrated into everyday life. The inhaler tracking capability is connected to a gamification platform that encourages and teaches children to self-manage their asthma. The notification system sends updates to caregivers when the inhaler prescription might need to be refilled. Data is securely transmitted and stored in the cloud. Parents and doctors can monitor usage on their phones, tablets, or computers.

“GeckoCap changes the game for asthma,” said Gecko Health Innovations CEO and Founder Yechiel Engelhard, MD. “Our platform leverages mobile technologies, cloud computing, and reward mechanisms to empower families and their children in their own health.”

GeckoCap’s proprietary technology is ultra low-power and wireless, enabling simple setup and automatic syncing of data without recharging. “The design of the GeckoCap stems from our personal and professional experience with pediatric asthma,” said CTO and Co-Founder Mark Maalouf. “We have many friends with asthma, and who have children with asthma. After speaking with them, we know how hard it is to deal with children suffering from a chronic condition.”

The data from the GeckoCap solution could also advance public health research by allowing clinicians and researchers to monitor asthma treatment compliance. “Medical centers have already started to design trials with us, and pediatricians are excited about this new opportunity”. The data provided would be aggregated to protect individual patient privacy.

According to Engelhard, “the GeckoCap will be available soon and for a limited time through a crowdfunding campaign. This is a great opportunity for a small startup like us, which doesn’t yet have formal marketing channels but which sees huge demand from the market. Parents and doctors are ecstatic about the product, and the crowdfunding project will allow us to manufacture and deliver much earlier than we otherwise could”.

GeckoCap strives to bring simplicity to wellness. The GeckoCap can be installed and used in seconds. New GeckoCap members can link their caps to their online profile. To access all of GeckoCap’s features, customers simply need a supported smartphone that is Bluetooth Smart Ready, such as the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5, or newer Android devices.

The technology was developed by a team of physicians and engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease and one of the leading causes of hospitalization for American children. One in seven, or nearly ten million, children are affected by the disease. Asthma is also a pressing public health issue, with costs exceeding $15 billion per year in the U.S. alone. Inhaled maintenance medication (corticosteroids) can effectively control asthma symptoms. However, non-adherence to treatment can result in unnecessary exacerbations, repeated symptoms, and even a visit to the emergency department. 50% of all asthma costs could be prevented if kids simply adhered to their prescription.

Gecko Health Innovations, Inc. is a technology healthcare startup founded by parents, engineers, and physicians from MIT. It develops products that simplify medication adherence and that improve the quality of life of those suffering from chronic conditions. GeckoCap, the first such product, is built on proprietary, patent pending technologies. GeckoCap is a platform that leverages the capabilities of mobile technology, data analytics, social reinforcement, and gamification to improve asthma medication adherence.
